Resident Assistant

So I know I haven't posted anything after Dunrovin, even though I have been here for two weeks. And my response to that is: BE PATIENT!!!! lol. Almost every waking moment here has been about either ResLife, or moving in/setting up/trying to relax!

It has definitely been worth it though! I have seriously changed so much, it is unbelievable. I only hope it sticks! I thought maybe their placement of me in La Skeffron (its a combination of the dorms La Salle, Skemp, and Heffron, and you say it with a french accent!) was a bad one, but it is definitely for me. The girls that I will be working with are unbelievable. They honestly make working and duty enjoyable. Each and every one of them. And we all love organizing, making To-do lists, and post-it notes! They seriously give me energy. We feed off each other. It's beyond words.

Today, the freshmen girls moved in to their dorm today (Skemp Hall). It was so much fun! We had to be up at 7 am (not the fun part), and welcome all the people moving in. I had to move boxes and stuff, and this one family was so grateful they brought us three big boxes of doughnuts!!!!! I didn't have breakfast this morning so it made me so happy!

I also helped with some of the paperwork, so I got to meet a lot of the girls that moved in. It was so much fun, and whenever someone turned in paperwork, we did "The Wave" to show our appreciation. Being dorky and silly is so fun sometimes!

I do have to be on duty tonight, so unfortunately I have to be awake from 9 PM to 2 AM. Yuck! This means I will be up for 20 hours in a row. This is also my first day on duty with actual people on campus, so heres to safety and maybe a little bit of entertainment to keep us up.

Cheers,

Neil

Dunrovin

They kept us uber busy at Dunrovin! Dunrovin is where we spent the first three days of RA training. We have to wake up at 8 am, and can't go to bed till 10 pm. Luckily I forgot my phone charger so that I don't have to worry about an alarm clock (sarcasm; I'm kicking myself!)

Day 1
So I pack 3 days worth of stuff in a bag and go to the information center on campus. I see some people I know, but not enough to feel comfortable. Like usual, there is a group of guys that sit together, acting super guy-like, which makes me totally avoid them. When we are getting on the shuttle, I intend to go on this one shuttle with some girls that I know, but it runs out of space! So I move to a different bus, sit in the back with 3 people I don't know for crap, and head towards our destination.

I learn that we are driving up to the cities (2 hr drive) WHICH I HAD DONE JUST THE OTHER DAY!!! lol. I become friends with the 3 other girls in the back of the shuttle with me. Whew.

We get to the camp, and walk in. We are told topick a room, guys on bottom, girls on top. I pick a room and sadly notice that there are humongous crucifixes nailed in each room to the cinder block walls. Yikes. The room looks like a place where brothers or nuns live. I am glad I did not listen to them when they said they would provide bedding, since their bedding absolutely looks bad.

We go outside to play those "get to know each other" games. I was surprised how social I was being. A lot of them were stupid games like throw the ball to a person and shout their name out, but my favourite was blind dodge ball. Its just like what it sounds. There is a person on the outside of the border and is shouting directions at you while you try and pick up the balls on the ground while avoiding ones flying through the air completely blindfolded! It was so much fun! With Darrell's help I won a round! It was so scary! I was so afraid of getting hit in the face! Next game I get out in literally 5 seconds hahahaha

We then have the more boring stuff where they talk to us. This creepy old teacher from our school starts reading us these excerpts from the bible and stuff and inwardly I groaned. I had hoped that this retreat would not be one of those catholic brainwashing things :/ :/ :/

Then we had a history lesson on what it means to be lasallian. I seriously had no clue before this. This is because nobody really talks about it. After that history lesson I realized that my whole freshman year I had been shown what it means to be lasallian. Unlike the other orders in the catholic faith, it seems this order lives their words and actually sticks to their ideals. I still don't know what I think about this, since I have decided I don't like Catholicism anymore but we will see.

We then had dinner (it was very good!) and then a bonfire. OMG! We made the biggest fire ever! It was so tall it shot burning coals up into the air like a volcano probably 20X it's height. We had smores.

There are 3 guys here that I am totally crushing on, but one more than the others since I know that the other two have girlfriends (one is even engaged!). Sadly I think he has a girlfriend back home, but hey I can't really control how and where cupid shoots me. One is even an Abercrombie Model. Now do you understand the temptation? lol

I then sat outside with some other people watching the meteor shower. It was so cool! Just laying on our backs looking for any sign of movement in the sky. We could see so many stars there! I could even see the band that goes across the sky that is made up of our "milky way". Did you guys even know about that? Because I didn't until I had come to MN.

Day 2 and 3

The second and third days were just as fun! The only reason I am going to write less is because I didn't have time to write about it back then. We played more games, had more talks and powerpoints. We even went out to swim on the river. Even though I brought a frisbee to play with I don't think people wanted to play with me at all because I was wearing a speedo. People are really into their gender roles here in the Midwest. They didn't like the speedo at all I think. And to tell the truth, I much prefer the ocean anyways. Salt just tastes better and sand should not be red, and you shouldn't be able to stand up in the middle of a body of water!

We had a board with points, and they separated us by our dorms' locations into houses like a knock off of Harry Potter! We are La Skeffron (a combination of La Salle, Skemp, and Heffron Halls.), our color is yellow, and our animal is a Platypus! ( Don't ask, I can't tell you why). It is definitely better than being the ladybugs or the bambis or the earwigs XP

We made shirts to wear for this one day when we had to wear all yellow. But no one in our group even has yellow clothes! So we did Tie-Die! It was amazing and it turned out way better than the Tie-Die party we had Ariell! I made a swirl Tie-Die and it is unbelievable! Laura (our HD [Hall Director]) bought this paper that if you print an image onto it, you can iron the image onto your shirt and it stays there! We now have our cartoon of our Platypus and it rocks!

We also did this one project (for points, because almost everything is for points) and we were given a huge sheet of paper, and three objects. The three objects given to us were a hanger, a fork, and a notebook. We had to come up with three programs for our residents that used or represented these objects in some way. We pretty much kicked ass in this. Ellen (from our group) teaches dining etiquette to people back home, so she came up with a program to teach people that. I drew the poster (which doubly kicked ass) and the hanger was used to represent clothing and donating old unused clothes to the salvation army. The notebook was used to write poetry in, which lauren did, and the poetry (both Haikus and Limericks) told the audience to go to a poetry bash that we would be holding. I got to read the poetry alongside Lauren. It was both a hit for the audience and the judges and we won! Our group is beyond amazing!

We had been winning for points, but then we played this game where you had to blow a ping pong ball off a table on the opponent's side. It was worth a lot of points (I think it was to make things more equal, but it still sucked) but it sucked because everyone on my team was super bad at it including me. I really think it was an excuse to give other teams points.

Thats all for Dunrovin!

A World of Wicked Fun!

I know this post is way later than is should have been, but better late than never, eh?

Wicked
So I went with Ariell and her friend Sarah and mi Madre to go see the musical Wicked. As you can see from the image above, it has had an impact on me. The book I had read (which had sparked the idea for the musical) was not as good at all. He had all of the elements in there that the musical had, but the whole tone and view on life the author had was so dim and so bleak and unappetizing that it just made you depressed. He also went into length about boring & unimportant stuff, while the important stuff in the play were the stuff he talked the least about.

The actors themselves were unbelievable. I did not notice a single mistake with all of them. They seemed to be in their own little world, and we just happened to be viewing them through a pane of glass. The set design was also beyond belief. I mean, everything looked mechanic and like it was made of metal! The dragon machine on top of the stage definitely took my heart. I now have a couple of their songs, but my absolute favorite is Defying Gravity. It sends (good) chills throughout my body each and every time I hear it.

Sea World

I then went to Sea World with Ariell and Sarah. It was definitely a better choice than the Zoo! I can't even remember the last time I had been there. Even though space-wise it has nothing on the zoo, water animals are just cooler! We got to see the Shamu show, which was alright, and got to pet sting rays and starfish. We also went on a ride where we got absolutely soaked. We also went on the skyride, which you can see lit up any time of the year. That was pretty cool. Even cooler was the Cirq De La Mer show, which had acrobats (really hot ones!) flipping and spinning and diving and swimming all over the place. The best part though was the Dolphin Show. It was beyond a doubt the best thing there. My old childhood dream of being a Dolphin Trainer has come back to me and I would love to have those peoples' jobs! The dolphins are so pretty and the most agile things in the water I have seen.

Pride of both kinds

Just to keep a slight update of the highlights of my summer, the two coolest things that have happened to me were 1) going to San Diego Gay Pride, and 2) the Imperial Beach U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition.

Gay Pride
The month of july is gay pride month. And that means, in the middle of july is the Gay Pride Parade! I went with my friends Jon, Christian, Matt, and Alex. The parade was super long but also just as fun! There were so many types of floats and people/bands/cars going past it was unbelievable. So much fun! My favorite float was probably the wizard of Oz float. I don't know what it was for, but they had music playing, and four dancers up there, each representing Dorothy, the Tin man, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion. The Tin man was excellent eye candy, he had the perfect body and was covered it silver spray paint. The scarecrow had straw attached and poking out of all his clothing (which was minimal, so most of it was hanging jewelry-like. The cowardly lion was my favorite! he was just so cute! he had a tail attached to his speedo and those little halloween ears. He was by far my favorite. I joked he was my future boyfriend. I dont even remember what dorothy looked like! lol

IB Sandcastle Competition
The sandcastle competition was also great! we got the final team together last minute, and after digging a giant pile for 45 minutes, we were about to give up. It was so much work! And then halfway through, when we had a pile as tall as Elyse (the team was Holly, her friend Tory, Elyse, Morgan, Ariell, and I) the general shape looked like a turtle. All the (annoying) spectators thought so. Ariell tried to make us all switch to making it a turtle, but we had already named it King Henry the Hermit on the sign in sheet!

So all in all, we were digging and building and watering for 5 hours, and ended up getting third place in the category (Sea Animals). We got a huge ass trophy and $200 in prize money! Hows that for never making a sandcastle before?!?!?! WAHOOOO! ::D:D:D:D:D:D

Keep Going

So the other day I lost one of my best friends. It was my decision, but then again it wasn't. It hurt a lot, and I think about it a lot, despite the fact that I will be better off for it.

My computer died the next day, and everything, absolutely everything has been lost. All of my stories (the things with which my life revolved around) are gone. I was in shock.

Went to the mall for some retail therapy, but it only helped temporarily. I am trying to build things up again, which is hard because I have been hit with such a hard blow. She said she would be my friend forever. That lie hurts. You SHOULD NOT say that unless you mean it. I also have to start most of my stories from the very beginning, which I guess upon further review might help me become a better writer. At least Steven is still on board with me <3

Keep Going,

Neil

Adventurer

I'm going to talk about three things here, most of them centering around my most important relationships, and sadly, of the fact that they are currently stagnant, either from distance, or a lack of communication.

1. My undying frustration towards normal mail being so slow
2. What I envision love to be,or should be
3. And finally my ever elusive relationship with my so-called best friend Emily.

Mail. Snail mail more correctly. How infuriating is it?!? Or more importantly, look how the Internet and immediate replies have morped us. I have three friends that are unavailable to either phone or Internet, and so letters are my only form of communication. It takes 2 weeks to get the mail to one of my friends (Sam), and then two back, making the communication take more than a month. My other friends Claire and Heidi are hiking, and I sent them letters two weeks ago also.

The lack of patience is so much that I wish I could just go there instead. I mean, how could people stand the suspense? If my life relied on a reply through the mail...I think I would die from the stress of wondering what it would be. Seriously! grrr! We should seriously consider implanting phones into our bodies at least,in our brains at most. You would never have to worry about contact getting lost or not received at all.Done rambling on that topic...lol

Love. It's something I am always talking about, probably because I am always trying to understand it.

My last relationship fizzled because I wanted to see how long it would take him to call me. I was convinced he wasn't trying hard enough, and sure enough it died because he didn't call for two weeks before I gave up. Steven is great, and amazing, at least in person. It's like the man is afraid of using the phone. I don't understand it. I am always the one trying to contact him. Am I at fault here, am I expecting too much, or is he not pulling his weight. It seems like I am repeating an old mistake. Yet whenever I call, I don't get an answer or I am putting my neck out too much.

My current vision of love is of a couple adventurers. They are on different journeys sometimes, but when together they share their adventures, and make some of their own together. It's almost like telling eachother a story about what youve experienced, and supporting eachother to keep going on.

I think finding this would be amazing. So why can't Steven be this? Or am I in the wrong?

Emily. We used to talk online and on the phone and on skype all the time during college. It was incessant; it was relieving. We would also talk so much about how summer was going to be amazing, how much time we were going to spend together.

Then she got injured, and we talked less and less and less. She just wouldn't be available, even though she had more time on her hands than ever (I at least thing this is so, because she couldn't do anything physical like Rowing). She left for Notre Dame after me only being able to see her once this summer. Last night she sent me a text saying how sad it was that we hadn't talked in a while, and when I tried to call her, she totally ignored my phone call! I don't know what game she is playing at. She was offended when I asked her if we were still friends, but seriously. Being injured doesn't mean you can't talk on the phone anymore.

When I got some nasty bug bites and was incapacitated to a bed for a couple days, I was going crazy and was ready to be entertained by anyone/anything that could get me to forget where I was. I would Imagine someone who has been just as incapacitated for 4 months to crave communication.

I miss her like crazy. I don't know what is going on. Is there a rift where we are drifting apart (I think this is improbable, but still the doubt is there)? Is she too self conscious where she doesn't want to trouble me with her problems? Is it something I have done?

I am not sure. I just hope it changes, because talking to her used to be the highlight of my days.

So there you have it, my current dilemma(s). Pretty Bleak, eh?
The sad thing about all of these situations is that I'm pretty sure none of them are my fault, so there is nothing I can really fix. It is a communications problem, and I am doing all I can to communicate..... :/

Wondering what to do,

Neil

Update

Was planning on having a large summer blog post before I went back to school, but this thing will pretty much be the Timeline that I rely upon for possibly the rest of my life. So it's good to keep track. (ie this post is more for me, but I guess you guys can revel in the joy too.)

So, I Introduce to this blog a new factor: Steven!

So I met Steven through a dating website called Chemistry. >_> dont judge me lmao!
He was the first person I've ever done this with, and hopefully will be the last.

So I Decided to meet up with him at the canyon near my house because Claire wanted to go hiking there. Pretty much a plan to hit two birds with one stone, but also because I get really shy when meeting new people, and I used Claire as a buffer. This was on June 5th. We pretty much just hiked all over hell, and it made me super tired. I realized right away how awesome he was! He also looked amazing by the way.

June 11th, He kept up with his promise to take me to a Sushi place (I had told him I had never eaten the stuff), and sure enough he did. We went to this place in the heart of Hillcrest, right off of 30th street called Ubizu Sushi or something. It was terribly romantic (thats a good thing), and I found it funny that every person in there was with another guy. Big surprise eh? lol

After that we went to watch Angels and Demons, and damn! What an amazing movie! Way better than the first one.

June 13th, he said that there was this monthly art show called Ray at Night, where you can see art for free all across one street. It was amazing and awesome! There was normal artwork, and then there was street artwork, like spraypainted pictures on cardboard, jewelry, and paper sculptures. I was beyond impressed.

After that (it closed at 10), we went to the cove, and I showed him the scenic walkway, the Cove, where we watched the stars and ocean, and *tried* to show him my secret beach, Strachan. Unfortunately it was high tide, and I got his and my shoes soaking wet! augh! lol

Today, June 19th, he wanted to visit Strachan, probably because he was unable to before. We finally got there (it was a little bit high tide), and just talked some more. I walked up to a perch on the outside of Strachan to see how high the waves were getting, and at one point he said something, and grabbed one of my belt loops, and kissed me!

It was funny because the first kiss he didn't seem to find satisfactory (I didn't either), so he mumbled nuh-uh, and we kissed again, this time perfectly (they were pretty much the same kiss if you get what I mean.) I was amazing.

He then wanted to see Morgan's Cove. So, after warning him what it was like, we went, and climbed down there. We watched the kayakers go by, and they definitely were watching us sit there too. After climbing back up, we sat on this cement-pillar thing. It was an amazing view. Then I kissed him, and it was just as amazing! Man I am lost to love already. whewwwww on the love drug! :P

Yours,

Neil :D
